“In Germany, we grew up expecting our products to last 100 years – and brands like Siemens and Miele stand for longevity. But today’s world is forcing us into much shorter cycles,” says Christian Sommer. He is CEO & Chairman of the German Center for Industry and Trade Shanghai Co. Ltd, a successful platform for German-Chinese contacts and business.
But the coronavirus and Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine have also made one thing clear: “Germany has proven that it can do something: If we really have to, we can change. However, the pressure to do so must be very high,” says the trained lawyer, adding: “We must maintain this willingness to change – otherwise we will fall behind.”
Christian Sommer appeals: “We need professionalism instead of naivety. We need more expertise instead of political palaver. Changes such as the development of artificial intelligence will shape the coming years. An area in which Germany is lagging behind.
“Only if we speak with a unified voice in Europe will we be able to play a decisive role in geopolitical cooperation,” Sommer concludes.
